Dania Casino & Jai Alai in Broward County, Florida will be closing Oct. 15 for renovations expected to last at least one year, leaving roughly 300 people out of a job. The property, formerly known as Dania Jai Alai, is hoping that a $50 million refurbishment will keep the racino competitive in the increasingly congested South Florida gambling market.

When Dania Jai-alai opened in 1953, it was only the second Jai-alai fronton in the United States. It is located in the city of Dania Beach, also known as the 'Antique Shopping Center of South Florida' and is just 10 minutes away from Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood, Florida, and only 30 minutes north of Miami's South Beach. While Florida’s eight racinos average $176 in revenue per day from each machine, Dania Casino is only taking in $65.

The new property will employ between 500 and 600 people.
